UTDC Services for TutorsThe UTDC supports tutors, demonstrators and sessional assistants with training, resources and ongoing support. (When the word "tutors" is used on this website, it generally refers to all part-time, limited-term contract teaching staff at VUW.) Details of workshop offerings are listed below. "Teaching Skills for New Tutors" courses are held two times a year in February/March and again in July. The three hour workshop introduces tutors to some basic teaching skills and concepts about learning. It covers ice breakers, getting your students involved, common problems encountered in tutorials and some possible solutions, University-wide resources and support. The workshop is open to all University tutors/demonstrators and complements School and department-based training and induction sessions. [Please note that Room 201 is not accessible by wheelchair. If you need access arrangements to be made, please indicate this on the enrolment form]. Please use the Online Enrolment form to enrol for these sessions Other WorkshopsAs well as the introductory sessions, UTDC offers a range of other workshops and seminars on teaching and learning issues and techniques. You're welcome to attend as many or as few workshops as you'd like, but if you attend enough workshops, you may be eligible for a Tutor Training Certificate of Attendance (TTCA). Tutor's Training CertificateThe UTDC offers a Tutor Training Certificate of Attendance to tutors who complete a series of requirements. Please see the Tutor's Training Certificate webpage. Small Group Teaching: A Guide for VUW TeachersThis handbook is a very useful guide for all VUW teachers, not just tutors. It includes detailed information on a wide range of issues relating to teaching delivery, and is available in hard copy from the UTDC for $10 a copy. Alternatively, a free PDF version is available by clicking on this link.
