Quickstart - using Turnitin reports
Introduction
The reports generated by Turnitin are an easy way to display and review teh type and extent of copying present within an individual document. The reports are colour coded by source and hyperlinked for easy review.
Please note Turnitin displays a colour-coded summary button indicating the extent of copying it has detected. This should be treated with care as 100% of material copied in a 10 page document can reflect one source or 100 - you have to open the report to assess the copying. Turnitin is also unable to reliably detect appropriate copying so the value returned is often an overestimate.
Instructions on using Turnitin reports
- Connect to the Turnitin system (http://www.turnitin.com) following the instructions in the Accessing Turnitin page if necessary.
- You should then be taken to the main Turnitin web page listing your classes. It will welcome you:

- In the middle of the page is an area that lists your exiting classes:

- Select the appropriate class by clicking on its name. If necessary follow the instructions on creating a new class.
- You will be presented with the assignment list panel for this class:

- Find the appropriate assignment in the list and click on the "inbox" button. If necessary follow the instructions on creating a new assignment.
- Find the appropriate report in the list of submitted work. If necessary follow the instructions on submitting documents for comparison.
- A greyed out box in the report column indicates that the Turnitin system has yet to process the submissions. Within 24 hours this should be updated to reflect the amount of copied material detected by the system:

- A coloured box in the report column indicates that the Turnitin report is now available and can be clicked upon to review the analysis:

- Click on the coloured report button and a new window will open with the analyis information:

- On the left hand side the report displays the submitted document with the copied material extracted into white boxes. Different sources for copied material are indicated by the colour of the text and the number on the right hand side. The panel on the right displays the document that may hav ebeen copied from bythe student.
- Links at the top allow you to "exclude quoted" material and "exclude bibliography" however these are not guaranteed to work perfectly.
- for printing or archiving as a PDF it is recommended that you change the mode setting to the "quickview (classic) report" option. This displays the report information in a simplified single page form:
