Quickstart - creating an assignment

Introduction

In order to get Turnitin to check student work it requires that you have a class and also an assignment context for uploading the files. The assignment should be considered a folder for organising the uploaded files and does not have to match the assessment programme in your courses.

Instructions on creating an assignment

  1. Connect to the Turnitin system (http://www.turnitin.com) following the instructions in the Accessing Turnitin page if necessary.

  2. You should then be taken to the main Turnitin web page listing your classes. It will welcome you:

  3. In the middle of the page is an area that lists your exiting classes:

  4. Select the appropriate class by clicking on its name. If necessary follow the instructions on creating a new class.

  5. If this is your first assignment, you will the following panel:

  6. To create your new assignment, click on the "create a new assignment" link. A new page will open, with the following panel:

  7. Enter in a descriptive name for your assignment - this will appear on any reports generated by the system.

  8. Select a due and post date for your assignment, choosing values sufficiently far in the future that you will have completed any submissions relating to this assignment.

  9. Leave the rest of the settings at their default values:

  10. Click on the submit button.

  11. Provided you have completed the required fields, you will see the list of assignments with your new assignment appearing at the bottom:

  12. If there has been a problem with the information you supply, it will return you to the assignment creation panel with a notice explaining what the problem is. You will need to fix this and submit again to create your assignment.
