Harnessing The Power Of E-Learning In Higher Education
A live online webinar event with Professor Diana Laurillard

Sixteen staff from Victoria joined with 463 academics from 42 universities worldwide Tuesday the 21st of March to hear Professor Diana Laurillard from the University of London and to participate in a collaborative ÒWebinarÓ or online web-based seminar. Hosted locally by the UTDC in the Advanced Teaching and Learning Laboratory established in the Rankine Brown Library this was an opportunity for VUW staff involved in online delivery to meet each other, discuss issues regarding the delivery of flexible and distance delivery, and to hear the experiences of other academics both nationally and internationally. This event was the first of its type held here at VUW and we look forward to hosting many in the future.

Diana LaurillardProfessor Laurillard is Chair of Learning with Digital Technologies in the School of Mathematics, Science and Technology, The Institute of Education at the University of London.

Diana is a leading international author, keynote speaker and researcher in the field of flexible learning and technology.

"For the educational innovator, who seriously wishes to improve the quality of education and the learning experience, it is imperative that we create an education system that is clear about its values and sets its aims and ambitions high, and that is capable of rapid adaptation to its technological, as well as its social, cultural and political environment. The argument that will be developed in this webinar suggests that we can do this if we exert some influence over the way in which e-learning is used in universities, and direct its power overtly towards the needs of learners" Diana Laurillard

In this 14 minute audio interview made for podcasting, Diana Laurillard talks about her chapter 'E- Learning in Higher Education (doc 95K)' from the book 'Changing Higher Education'. Please download this MP3 audio interview and listen to it before the webinar.

Background Reading

Participants were encouraged to download and read, as background for the webinar, 'E- Learning in Higher Education (doc 95K)' by Professor Laurillard, a chapter from Changing Higher Education, Paul Ashwin (Ed), Routledge, London, 2005 (ISBN 0415341299). Coordinators at each location were requested to read the chapter and submit to Allan Carrington, before the event, any questions relating to their local situation. Professor Laurillard addressed these questions in the webinar and followup podcasts. VUW Participants were invited to email their questions to Stephen Marshall by Friday the 3rd of March.

MVP Exemplar

Participants, especially staff leading this event at each location, found the Report on the Educating the Net Generation Webinar Series of 2005 (pdf 1MB) helpful in understanding how the Multiple Venue Presentation model of a webinar can be used to maximise learning and development.

This webinar was a joint collaboration between the Centre of Learning and Professional Development (CLPD) of the University of Adelaide and the London Knowledge Lab (LKL) of the University of London
