Biography

Peter Looms is senior consultant at DR (the major Danish public service broadcaster) where he works on international strategic projects to do with traditional and new media.

Peter is Danish but grew up and went to university in the UK, where the focus at the time was on experimental psychology and neurophysiology. After Cambridge and moving to Denmark, his work shifted to the use of technologies to facilitate teaching and learning. This has been an integral part of his career for nearly four decades. After several years designing learning resources for learning and using foreign languages in professional contexts he moved to DR in 1977, where he was responsible for the evaluation of a number of major educational broadcasting projects. ÊHe was later involved in nationwide programmes for in-service teacher training in the use of audiovisual resources and microcomputers in primary, secondary and vocational education.

Since 1986 Peter has been working on what was originally termed interactive multimedia for education -first videodiscs and CD-ROMs, then media for digital television, broadband and more recently social media, smart phones and media for handheld devices such as the iPad.

The focus has always been on making change happen in close cooperation with teachers, learners and other key constituents.

For the last 20 years, his work has moved towards strategy and policy for ICT in education. ÊThis included serving on a government committee and contributing to a White Paper that lead to an increased focus on ICT and blended learning in Denmark.

Peter currently holds three part-time academic posts at universities in Denmark and Hong Kong involving media and innovation. ÊHe has close ties with universities and media organisations in Australia, China, Europe and New Zealand.
