Blackboard Tutorial: Creating Assignments in Blackboard

Assignments

An Assignment is designed to allow students to upload to submit their course work (e.g. essay or assignment) electronically directly through Blackboard. The assignment facility provides both the student and the instructor with an ability to follow the submission and grading cycle of an assignment, as each step in this cycle is recorded in Blackboard. It has facilities for giving students feedback on their work and making personal comments and notes only available to the lecturer. A Grade Center entry is automatically created for each course assignment. Using the assignment facility in Blackboard also makes it easier to check student work for plagiarism, using TurnItIn (the online plagiarism detection software).

Creating an assignment

  1. Go via the Control Panel > Course Resources (or another content area hick will contain assignments).
  2. From the “Select” option at the top right hand side of the screen, use the drop down box to select Assignment and then click on “Go”
  3. Enter a Name, points possible and instructions for students.
  4. Make the assignment available to students by clicking on “Yes”, or leave it invisible by selecting “No”. (Note: the “No” option may be useful if you are setting up the course assignments in advance).
  5. You can chose to display the assignment for a specified period by using the date restriction option.
  6. You can also attach a file that has been prepared in advance to the assignment by using the File to Attach option. The file may include a list of essay topics and their descriptions, or resources/material related to the assignment.
  7. Click on Submit when happy with your choices.

Note: Do NOT use the Digital Dropbox for setting up assignment submissions.
