Technical Information and Requirements

This section provides advice on technical matters related to using Blackboard.

Victoria is currently running Blackboard Learn Release 9.1.5.

User System Requirements

Use a web browser to connect to the Internet. In your browser, enable Cookies, Javascript and Java. You will need to enable pop-windows to use collaboration tools (chat and virtual classroom).

Enabling JavaScript, Cookies and Pop-Up Windows

Steps

Apple Safari

  • From the Safari menu, select Preferences
  • Select Security
  • Select Enable JavaScript
  • Select Enable Java

Internet Explorer

  • From the menu bar, select: Tools > Internet Options > Security (tab)
  • Select Internet
  • Select Custom Level
  • Scroll down to the Scripting section
  • Enable Active Scripting

Mozilla Firefox

  • From the menu bar, select: Tools > Options > Content
  • Select Enable Javascript
  • Select Enable Java

Cookies

Browser

Steps

Apple Safari

  • From the Safari menu, select Preferences
  • Select Security
  • Under Accept Cookies, select Only from sites I visit OR Always

Internet Explorer

  • From the menu bar, select: Tools > Internet Options > Privacy (tab)
  • Click on Sites
  • Type: "vuw.ac.nz" (without the quotes) into the field.
  • Click Allow
  • Click OK

Mozilla Firefox

  • From the menu bar, select: Tools > Options > Privacy
  • Select Accept cookies from sites
  • Select Accept third-party cookies

Note: This will enable all sites to set cookies. If you want to enable cookies just for blackboard.vuw.ac.nz, the Exceptions button in the Cookies section allows you to block or accept cookies from particular sites.

Popup Windows

Steps

Apple Safari

  • From the Safari menu, select Preferences
  • Untick the box for Block pop-up windows

Internet Explorer

  • From the menu bar, select: Tools > Internet Options > Privacy (tab)
  • Untick the checkbox for Turn on Pop-up Blocker

Note: If the checkbox beside Turn on Pop-up Blocker is not checked, then Pop-up windows are enabled for all sites.

Mozilla Firefox

  • From the menu bar, select: Tools > Options > Content
  • Untick the checkbox for Block popup windows

Note: If the checkbox beside Block popup windows is not checked, then popup windows are enabled for all sites.

Microsoft Viewers

If you do not have Microsoft Office on your computers, to access Word, Powerpoint or Excel content, you will need the appropriate viewer. These viewers can be downloaded free from the Microsoft Download Centre or the Microsoft Office Online websites.
